Excerpt

"Tell me something about you, Evie." Evie's gaze darted to Luca, then away. She chewed her bottom lip, seemingly contemplating whether to tell him something or not.
"I like computers." Luca's brows shot up. It wasn't a surprise, he'd suspected as much, but he thought she'd share something trivial, like a favorite color.
"Makes sense. You learned how to use the online system at work pretty quickly." Evie's eyes dropped to her feet at the compliment, but Luca saw a hint of a smile on her lips. "What do you spend most of your time doing on computers?"
Evie shrugged, looking uncomfortable for a moment. "Not much. Just some gaming and things."
Lie. Evie had just told Luca a lie. He could tell by her pupils dilating, her gaze darting away. There had also been a slight hitch in her heart rate. Why would she lie about that?
"Ever thought about studying IT?" Luca pushed.
There was another pause before Evie's gaze dropped, and she continued, "No. I, uh . . . it hadn't really crossed my mind."
Another lie. Interesting.
As Evie took another step, her foot caught on something, and Luca could see she was going to tumble down. Catching her arm with his lightning reflexes, Luca held her body against his. Her skin was warm to touch where her shirt had risen slightly.
When Evie glanced up. Luca could smell vanilla and strawberries on her. She was all soft and delicate, where he was hard and not delicate. He had to fight the urge to pull her head up and press his lips to hers.
"Go on a date with me."
It was a statement, but Luca still needed a yes. Evie looked taken aback. Luca was a bit too. He hadn't anticipated those words to leave his mouth, but now that they had, they felt right. Knowing what kind of response he was going to receive before she spoke the words, Luca patiently waited to rebut.
"I can't."
Wishing she would expand, he was disappointed when only silence followed.
Not willing to give up so easily, Luca lowered his head and placed his lips next to her ear.
"Go on a date with me."
He felt the shiver run up her spine. Evie's head turned, and her lips were a mere few centimeters from his. Her warm breath touched his lips. If he just lowered his head a fraction, they would be touching.
The indecision was clear to see in her eyes, but beneath that, he could see the desire. It was almost a desperate yearning to say yes. Deciding he didn't want to play fair, Luca pulled Evie closer. She wanted him as much as he wanted her.
"Say yes," Luca started a gentle stroke on the inside of the wrist as he whispered the words into her ear. "Please."
Trailing his mouth down her neck, his lips never touched her, but the promise was there.
"Yes."

EXCERPT:

The wolf huffed as a plate of food appeared by her bedside.
Not food for the wolf, food for the girl.
She buried herself deeper into the blankets around her, willing herself to fall back to sleep, but her empty stomach wouldn’t let her.
Saying that she would rather starve than turn back was always a compelling thought in the moment, but she always, eventually, relented.
Fur retracted back into her skin as her bones warped, returning her form to that of a woman.
And her mind, as well.
She cringed as the now-familiar blanket of grief and guilt enveloped her.
It was unbearable.
The palace cook had filled her plate with curry, the one thing Freya had been able to keep down for months.
She had no idea why, but at least it was something.
Freya was still sure that she would prefer raw meat that the wolf could stomach, but she knew that she couldn’t ask for that.
She hadn’t even asked for this.
It had presumably been the result of the palace staff realising that she didn’t eat anything else they sent her.
Guilt gnawed further at her at that thought.
She would prefer it if they just ignored her, but she supposed that there was no way they ever would.
She was the one who paid their wages, after all. If she starved…
Well, Damon would still be there. And Katherine.
Maybe if Freya starved, they would finally be able to return home.
Her door opened, and Freya grabbed her blanket to pull it around herself before glaring at the intruder.
“I’m not dressed,” she growled at Rodrick, the wolf still in her throat.
He, infuriatingly, didn’t seem to react at all. “You’re never dressed. But I needed to see you while you were in humanoid form. I do not know if the wolf can understand me, but she never turns back when I request it, she just goes to sleep.”
The wolf did understand him, she just didn’t care.
Unfortunately, Freya did care.
“You’re holding court tonight,” Rodrick informed her.
“I didn’t ask you to arrange that.”
“No, but it has been too long. And as you were indisposed, I asked Prince Damon. He agreed that I should go ahead.”
Flames flared across Freya’s skin. “I thought I told you not to bother Prince Damon while he’s away from the Palace.”
“My Queen, you have been indisposed for weeks. While Lord Uther’s death, and the birth of Princess Katherine, means that things are now quiet, there are still some matters which cannot be ignored. If you will not deal with them, Prince Damon will have to.”
“What matters could possibly be so important? The nobles are just bitching like always.”
“And like always, they need their Queen to help them see sense. Otherwise squabbles will turn into something rather more dangerous. You did just avert a civil war, My Queen. It would be prudent not to let another fester while you’re distracted.”
“Fine,” Freya said as she steeled herself as she wrapped her blanket around her, forcing herself out of her bed and towards the bathroom.
She probably needed a shower. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had one.
Wolves didn’t need them.
“Prince Damon will arrive here in an hour,” Rodrick said before leaving the room.

Author Bio:
Some say she's an ancient creature of nightmare that was unleashed from beneath the ocean, come to devour the souls of men. Others say that she's a cosmic being from the beyond the stars that has taken corporeal form to learn our ways for some unknown end...
In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely (probably?) not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...
The only contact she has with humanity is publishing a book once a month, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.

EXCERPT:

“Can we talk about what happened back at the safe house?” she asked, finally breaking the awkward silence.
“I’m not sure rehashing that shootout is such a good idea, Sid. It’s only going to make you feel lower than you already do.”
“No, I don’t mean that.”
“Oh.” He glanced at her again and knew immediately what she wanted to talk about.
“You said that when you touch someone, you can see things about their life somehow? Things about their past or what’s going on with them.”
“That’s right.”
“When we met at the restaurant and you shook my hand… you saw something then, didn’t you? That’s why you looked at me the way you did.”
The intrigue in her light brown eyes held his attention captive for a moment, but the certainty in her voice told him there was no point in trying to sidestep her question. He pulled his gaze away from hers and swallowed.
“Yeah, I did.” His reply was quiet, resigned to the notion that their earlier conversation on this subject wasn’t quite finished.
“What did you see?”
The images came back to him in technicolor, every detail crisp and fresh in his mind. But he knew he couldn’t tell her about them. Not until he’d had a chance to sort them out. He couldn’t tell her that the flashes he’d seen involved him. Involved them. Together. Scenes from their future presumably.
But what was it they always said in those science fiction shows he and Adam loved to watch as kids? That the future wasn’t set in stone, and any glimpse of it was just one possible outcome.
Of course, that was science fiction. This?
He had no clue what the hell this was.

Author Bio:
Lashell Collins is an American author of romantic suspense, paranormal romance and rockstar romance. She walks to the beat of her own drum, but that's okay 'cause she's got a pretty good sense of rhythm. Basically, she's a geeky, quirky, laid-back, rocker-loving kinda girl who's married to a retired cop, motorcycle-riding, bad-boy alpha all her own, and she likes to write about sexy police officers, werewolves and rockstars, or some inventive combination of the three!
When she's not busy tapping away on her laptop and living vicariously through her characters, she can usually be found watching Grimm, rocking out to Slash, stuffing her face full of Chinese food, or riding on the back of her husband's Harley-Davidson. Between her book characters and the ones she knows in real life, her plate stays pretty full. But she loves to hear from readers, so give her a shout sometime!

Book Blitz: Kind of Famous & Giveaway

Kind of Famous
Mary Ann Marlowe
Publication date: April 7th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Layla Beckett has a secret. For the past ten years, she’s run the most trafficked fan site on the Internet for her favorite band—under an alias, naturally. When she lands a job at the prestigious New York City music magazine The Rock Paper, she’s suddenly thrust into the world she’s only observed from the cheap seats. Now that she’s brushing elbows with sexy guitarists and hot frontmen, she wants to play it cool and keep her superfan status on the down low. Although she’s dying to gush on her forum, posting her insider adventures online could expose her real-life identity and blow her cover.
And that’s all before one of those sexy musicians becomes a fan of her.
From the minute he meets Layla, Shane Morgan’s heart beats a heavy metal rhythm, but his head is full of doubt. Since only the most hardcore fans could pick the drummer out of a lineup, he’s resigned to groupies using him to get closer to the more famous guitarists.
But he doesn’t want to be Layla’s passthrough.
As Layla gets to know the real people behind the music, she’s drawn to the less-than-flashy drummer’s sweet charms, fascinating mind, and banging hot body, but she worries about his insecurities. She needs to convince Shane she’s moved beyond fandom before he discovers her online history and loses all faith in her intentions.
But the Internet is forever, and secrets have a way of getting out.

EXCERPT:

The moon shone bright, but Shane’s eyes remained dark as the deepest ocean. He blinked twice and ran his thumb down my cheek to my chin. I confess that I’d had some illicit fantasies about the guys in the band, but I’d never felt the one-two punch to the gut that I got when his hand slid around the back of my neck and he pulled me forward to press his lips against mine.
He drew back, slowly enough that his lips continued to touch mine for a lingering moment, and I opened my eyes before he did. He looked like he’d tasted ice cream for the first time and wanted to savor it. My mind reeled with questions, and I had this crazy thought that I wished he were more famous so I’d have read something about him on the Internet before, so I’d know who he was and what I might be getting myself into.
If he were like Adam, I’d know to grab hold of him and never let go. If he were like Noah, I wouldn’t want to give him the time of day.
But those lips.
A tiny smile lit his face. “Should I apologize again?”
With that, I threw caution to the wind and twisted both hands into his T-shirt. He laughed when I pulled him back into a less hesitant kiss, but his laughter stopped when my tongue brushed his, and he spun us around so he could press me up against the metal door behind us.
It had been a long time since I’d been physical with a man. Way too long.
Shane’s lips teased mine, and I felt like I’d lived in a desert my whole life, never knowing that water existed. Suddenly I’d fallen into a deep pool. It might turn out to be an oasis, or I might drown, and I didn’t care. My fingers traced his cheek, then brushed his neck, and his body responded in shivers. He lifted the edge of my shirt and explored my lower back, creeping up my spine until he reached my bra.
I’d lost track of where we were. Everything was him. His mouth on mine. His hands on me. His skin. His . . . I gasped. He pressed harder into me, and I ground back, need flaring inside me.
He took the first step away. “Layla.” The fact that his voice came out ragged and breathless only made me want to tear his shirt off and spend the next ten hours licking every inch of him while he said my name.

Grand Finale Blitz: Formula for a Perfect Life & Giveaway

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you'll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch - Author Interview

What inspired you to write FORMULA FOR A PERFECT LIFE?

I wanted to write Kayla’s story (and the whole series) for college-age kids trying to live a Christian life in a secular world and specifically a secular university. I have college-age kids—both strong Christians—both attend secular universities—and the challenge at their age to balance their faith and worldview in a place where sin is rampant is very real. I worry about young adults who don’t know Jesus and who struggle with sin and forgiveness and self-worth.

Simply Kelina - Spotlight

@momfluenster - Excerpt

Kayla Cummings stared at the two lines so long her vision blurred. Her breath came fast and faster until her lungs felt too full, too thick, too heavy to function. Her mind whirled, her neurons firing through a maze of wrong turns and dead ends. She dropped the stick with the prison-bar stripes onto the counter and fell back against the bathroom door, freefalling in the void of denial.

No. No. Just … NO.

"I recommend Formula for a Perfect Life by Christy Hayes to readers searching for an inspirational contemporary romance. There’s a strong message about reserving sex for marriage and Christian faith is a part of the book. Overall, I enjoyed Formula for a Perfect Life and it’s a keeper for my bookshelf."

Uplifting Reads - Review

"I enjoyed reading this reading this book. It had just enough faith references to serve as a reminder to keep the faith, especially as we are in a very weird place in our world right now. But it wasn't preachy. So I think even others who are less religious may still find some value in this book."

“I won’t keep you, honey, but I wanted to let you know Darcy will be in town this weekend.”

Ben rolled his eyes. His ma kept pushing him to officially get back together with Darcy. Although they’d broken up freshman year when they’d gone to different colleges, they were still a couple in every way that counted. Everyone—his parents, Darcy, her parents—still thought of them as a couple. It was only a matter of logistics. “That’s nice. Give her my best.”

“No, silly. She’s going to be at Addison State.”

His stomach glazed with ice. “Here? It’s the weekend before finals.” And why hadn’t she given him a heads-up?

"Let me say - I LOVED everything about this book! The cover is gorgeous, the story has all the feels and the mail characters (Kayla and Ben) have so much depth and emotion and have you rooting for them till the end! . . . I love how this book truly portrays the struggles. The hard choices that have to be made. . . . It’s not all sunshine and rainbows but you can get through it and be happy one way or another.

This is a top book for me for 2020, the connection I have to it is real."

"Wow! This was such a great story and is definitely up near the top of my list of favorites. . . . I loved the way this story progressed. . . . I felt that the romance between these two built naturally, starting with two people who did not really know each other and were uncomfortable with the situation, to a couple who truly cared for each other and the life that was created between them. This story was very nicely done."

"In the book Formula for a Perfect Life by Christy Hayes, the characters go through a world-shifting experience that changes their life plans. . . . Though this is marketed as a Christian novel, it’s not sugary sweet. The situation heads into real-life territory."

As soon as the door closed behind her, Ben closed his eyes. What in the world was she doing here? He couldn’t wrap his mind around the strange turn of events. First Darcy, now Kayla. Thank goodness Darcy left before Kayla knocked on his door. How would he have explained that one? And how did he explain her showing up weeks after they’d shared an unforgettable night together? What could she possibly want from him now, the weekend before finals? He—they—should be studying.

Kayla emerged from the hallway, her shoulders back, her chin lifted. When she stopped a few feet from him, he noted her glassy eyes and pale skin.

"The novel is a cozy romantic read. It was a predictable read as there weren't many unexpected surprised or deep dark secrets. . . . it was a bit realistic. The book would be a good read for fans of cozy heartwarming romantic reads."

I'm Into Books - Excerpt

Kayla pulled her legs into her chest, tucking her face against her knees, choking on guilt and fear. She’d majorly screwed up, but this time she’d broken more than just her life—she’d broken Ben’s. Ben sat inches away. Wilting. Steeped in misery. She pitied them both, but like it or not, what was done was done. The time for pity was over. Feeling sorry for themselves was a luxury they couldn’t afford.

“The thing is, Ben, it’s not about us. What we did was weeks ago, and no matter how much we want to go back and change what happened, we can’t. It’s about the baby. Everything has to be about the baby. Because intended or not, however we decide to move forward, there is a baby and we’re both responsible.”

"This bittersweet story has merit in both the various individual character's personalities and in the situations involved. These are all well defined and "draws" the reader into the story causing the feeling of him/her being there. . . . The novel is very well-written. The connection of book and reader are strong and poignant."

Remembrancy - Review

"Christy Hayes tackles a challenging, but relevant, subject in her latest New Adult release. Formula for a Perfect Life is about an unplanned pregnancy and the fallout that occurs for the two families whose lives will change."

Pause for Tales - Review

"I liked this story. I liked who Kayla and Ben become by the end. Especially as they reach for a greater purpose and put away their own selfishness for the sake of their child. This story does bring us to a satisfying and sigh worthy conclusion and I was glad to go on this journey with them."

"Hayes kept me anchoured into the story - she didn't make excuses for her characters, nor did she overtly bring into the forum of their duress the inspirational messages you might have felt could have been added into the fray of their spiraling anxieties. . . . She openly lets her characters choose their own words and to fumble their own way through tomorrow . . . I needed a story to pull me back into the joy of reading- Hayes game me a story which rooted me into her characters' lives, gave me a reason to champion their cause and gave me such an uplift of joy to discover their story . . ."

"With a pinch of faith, this is a realistic and honest look into unplanned pregnancy along with the impact it has on the mother-to-be, the father-to-be, as well as their families. It also highlights how important strong friendships are in addition to family. Delightful, and a true example of the plans God has for us – even when we’re sure of what we want. And, sometimes it gives us the courage to stand up for ourselves."

"This is a sweet read by Christy Hayes that I will definitely recommend right from the start! . . . I was drawn in from the beginning of the book until the end and I really liked how the author used the phrase God has a plan for you Karebear. He sees outside the big picture where we can only see what is front of us. . . . I will be looking forward to reading more of this author's books in the future. She's just that enjoyable!"

Splashes of Joy - Excerpt

“I know that.”

“You know what?”

“I know I probably can’t give the baby away. I love the idea of it. I’ve looked at some websites. I know there’s a need.”

“But?”

Kayla played with the hem of her shirt, rolling and unrolling it between her fingers. “I’m going to get attached. Even knowing it’s the right thing to do, I don’t think I can give it away and live with myself. I’d always wonder. I’d always miss it. I’d never recover.”

"It opened strong and kept my interest throughout. . . . This story doesn’t gloss over the difficulties or the negative views others reflect on couples finding themselves in unplanned pregnancies. It deals with all aspects reasonably and authentically, good and bad, and binds it together with soft and subtle Christian themes of perseverance, acceptance, forgiveness, and redemption."

"Formula For a Perfect Life meets the new adult age group where they are at. It takes an honest look at the consequences of choices this demographic has to make every day, and it frames them in the light of Truth and grace. Well-written and engaging – even really cute at times – you’ll be invested in Kayla and Ben’s journey from beginning to end."

His eyes drop to the table. “There’s another reason we haven’t left town.” His words cause all of us to tense, and his men take it as a threat. Moving forward, their hands reach for their weapons, and we go for our own. I have mine out and the end of the barrel directly in Crow’s face before either of his brothers manage to pull guns on us.
“Tell your men to stand down before I put a bullet in your head,” I warn him.
“Stand down,” he barks, and his men holster their weapons. Unfazed, Crow continues, as he looks to my brother. “I have someone waitin’ outside that I’d like you to meet.” Then his eyes settle on my face. “L.A,” he calls to one of his men. “Bring her in.” Crow’s eyes never leave mine.
What the fuck kind of games are they playing?
“You got it.” His brother, L.A, turns toward the door, but Everest won’t let him pass. “Think you could tell the mountain here to move?” He looks over his shoulder.
“I’m not playin’ games here, Riggs. My old lady is no threat to you or your club.” Crow is quick to reassure us, but I don’t give two shits. I keep my gun on the fucker, just in case.
“Let him pass,” Riggs orders Everest, and he steps aside. Looking down at Crow, my brother tells him, “Let’s hope, for your sake, you’re right. I’d hate to see my brother make a mess all over my barroom floor.”
His man L.A opens the door, leans out, motioning to grab someone’s attention. A tall, thin brunette steps inside, with her face, cast down to the floor as she approaches. The wringing of her hands as she keeps them clasped in front of her tells me she is nervous.
The moment she lifts her head, I’m staring at a ghost from my past.

EXCERPT:

Clyde pointed forward, brushing the unruly hair he inherited from me from his forehead. “What’s that?”
My heart sped up. “What’s what?”
“Those wavy things in the air.”
I exhaled loudly, tension I hadn’t even realized I was carrying relaxing from my shoulders. “Damn.” “Damn?” he and Macy parroted at the same time.
“Yeah, damn. You had me freaking out there. Those waves distorting the air are magic. If Clyde can see them, we’re in the clear.”
“How come I can’t see them?” Macy asked.
“You must just not be looking right,” I said, though I didn’t know how exactly she could be looking wrong. The barrier was ahead of us, in plain sight. Anyone with magic should be able to see it. Even those with weak magic could find the town limits well enough to enter.
“I must not be looking right,” Macy repeated, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
My favorite.
“Right there.” I pointed ahead just as Clyde had. “It’s like heat waves coming off the pavement.” “Only they go all the way up to the sky,” Clyde added, and a bit more tension oozed from me.
Macy shook her head. “I don’t see anything. Seriously.”
“That’s …not possible,” I said.
She crossed her arms and turned the full brunt of her sass toward me: “I’m telling you, there’s nothing there. You think I’m lying or something?”
“Of course not. There’s no reason to lie. Actually, there’s never reason to lie to your mother.” I arched my brow at them in my I’m-dead-serious look.
Clyde chuckled. Super encouraging.
“I don’t know what to tell you, Ma,” Macy said. “I don’t see anything but more pot-holey road.” Clenching my fingers around the steering wheel, I debated what to do. I couldn’t call my family. There were no cell phones or landlines in the entire town, a fact I’d purposefully omitted in my brief rundown to my kids of what was to become their new home. They would’ve fought me to leave even harder if they’d realized their beloved iPhones were about to be rendered useless.
The barrier dome that protected Gales Haven from discovery behaved as a gigantic Faraday cage. No electromagnetic pulses got in, and none got out. The concentration of magic in the community interfered with connections to the outside world. Every time landlines had been attempted, the result was the same: crackle.
My options were twofold: I could drive through and hope like hell the protective barrier didn’t zap my daughter. Or I could turn around and abandon all hope that Macy would get the help she needed, guidance she could only get from my family.
I’d never heard of someone with magic not seeing the barrier’s signature shimmer. I had no idea what it meant.
“When your magic erupts like it’s been doing,” I asked Macy, “what does it feel like?” “Like I stuck my entire hand in an electric socket and shocked the shi—”
I gave her my mom glare.
“Like I get a monster shock every time,” she finished.
Nodding, I nibbled at my lip. “Okay. Good,” I said, mostly to myself.
“What’s good?” Macy asked.
“If your magic’s too weak, the barrier won’t let you through. I assume it also won’t let you see it. But if it’s shocking you like that, you’ve got enough. For sure.”
I hoped.
“What about me?” Clyde asked. “Do I have enough?”
“If you can see the barrier, we’re good.” I nodded to convince myself that everything would be smooth sailing from here on out, and kept right on nodding to myself when I didn’t fully believe it. Nothing had been particularly easy in my life.
Didn’t mean I didn’t kick ass and take names. I did—all day long.
I’ve got this.
I eased the car back onto the road and crawled toward the shimmer, throwing constant glances at Macy. With her big brown eyes and long, dark straight hair, she didn’t look much like me.
Maybe twenty feet from the barrier, I asked, “Still nothing?”
“Nope,” she answered, popping the p.
“I can’t believe you can’t see it,” Clyde said. “I can see it tons.”
“It’s not like that makes you better than me,” Macy retorted right away.
He hmmphed, and Macy swiveled in her seat. She gasped. “I see it! When I turned my head, I saw it out of the corner of my eye,”
“Good enough for me.” I exhaled loudly and pressed down on the accelerator.
I might have left Gales Haven under less than auspicious circumstances, but nineteen years had passed since then. Long enough to discover that in this world—magic or not—we make our own luck.
I had no desire to be some shrinking violet. Or the meek wife Devin had expected and tried his darnedest to mold me into.
I was returning to town on my own terms—sort of. And not a single woman in my family had ever done anything meekly—or quietly.
I gunned the engine, and yelling out “Towanda,”I crossed the shimmering barrier.

Book Blitz: Baptism of Fire {Playing With Hellfire #1} & Giveaway

Baptism of Fire
Jessie Thomas
(Playing With Hellfire, #1)
Publication date: March 31st 2020
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy
Welcome to Perdition Falls, New York: where arson is considered a recreational activity, the abnormally hot climate makes everything unbearable, and according to one origin story shrouded in myth and legend, our city is an actual Hellmouth.
I’ve learned those infernal tales aren’t just a cheap marketing ploy to lure in tourists and paranormal frauds.
It’s Hell. We’re literally sitting on top of Hell. Fire, brimstone, actual demons–the works.
When an incendiary–the name other pyromancers have given to the infestation of Hellfire-wielding demons–kills my closest friend and fellow firefighter, I’m left with a rare power I barely understand. It’s the only reason I survived. It also makes me a target, something to be coveted by those who know Perdition Falls’ most dangerous, well-kept secrets.
While a demonic arsonist puts the city’s resident pyromancers on edge, I’m reunited with my long-lost childhood friend Javier, who shares the same strange power that runs through my veins. With him, I find my footing in a place I thought I knew and buried memories from our past start to resurface. As our ragtag group comes together, we become the last defense against the incendiaries’ corrupt hold on the city…one completely disastrous mission at a time.
But taking down this homicidal demon with a flair for pyromania might mean trusting one of their own.
BAPTISM OF FIRE is a thrilling, slow burn urban fantasy perfect for fans of McKenzie Hunter, Annette Marie, C.N. Crawford, and K.F. Breene.

EXCERPT:

There was no way to know for sure how long I’d been out. It could have been moments. Maybe two minutes or five. I blinked slowly, staring up at the gaping hole we’d dropped through that was now barely visible through the layer of blackening smoke, afraid to move as my body regained consciousness. Everything hurt. That was the first thing I felt—the pain of bruised, strained muscles, the agony that had traveled up my left side.
The next thing was the heat. The upstairs hallway looked unrecognizable now, a narrow passage engulfed in fast-moving smoke and an inferno that blazed up the walls with an overpowering intensity that shouldn’t have been possible. I’d sweated through my clothes, the fabric drenched, my skin and hair dripping with salty perspiration. My helmet had rolled away somewhere during the collision with the floor, and I knocked into Moretti’s with my elbow once I finally decided that lying there waiting for the house to come down on top of us wasn’t that great for self-preservation.
Shit. Moretti.
Over the steady whoosh of the flames demolishing the rooms around us, I heard the melodic chirp of his PASS alarm. A noise I dreaded hearing, a source of nightmares.
And it got me moving.
I sat up and almost regretted it, black spots dancing across my vision as a blinding, gnawing pain spiked through my side. Like it had torn its way in deep, shredding muscle and tissue and causing serious damage. With a shaking hand, I dragged my gloved fingers over my turnout coat to find some kind of debris—I had no damn idea what it was, and at this point I didn’t want to know—sticking out of my left side. I lifted my glove to my sightline to see it smeared with dark crimson.
The gasping whine that echoed in my mask didn’t sound like me at all.
Moretti’s alarm brought me back to my senses. No time.
My pain didn’t matter, not now. I had to work through it.
Groaning, I stayed low to the floor, crawling on all fours to where Moretti lay sprawled and motionless. Every movement pierced the jagged wound in my side, made the heat and the sweat and misery worse. I leaned over him, relieved when I saw the rise and fall of his chest. The orange glow from the fire highlighted the edges of his dark hair, traced the swell of his cheekbones with deep shadows. In the light, I noticed the bright red trickling down one side of his face from somewhere under his hairline.
I tapped his cheek with an open palm. “Moretti,” I called. “Hey, Moretti…come on, open your eyes. Anthony, I need you to wake up.”
Nothing.
“Phoenix!” That was Ramos, her distant shout crackling over our radios. “Moretti! This place is starting to come down!” Well, shit, I hadn’t noticed.
“You have to evacuate now,” Patterson ordered.
“I can’t,” I snapped. “Moretti’s down. He’s…he’s down, but breathing.”
“The stairs are blocked,” Ramos yelled back. “We’re working on it, hang in there.”
Blocked with what? Nothing about this fire made any sense, so why would it start now?
I didn’t know how badly Moretti was hurt, which made me hesitant to move him. But if we didn’t get out of this hallway—no matter how quickly the rest of our team might’ve been working—then we weren’t going to get out of here at all. On my knees, I grabbed the straps of his SCBA and started dragging him around the minefield of burning debris toward the stairs. I grit my teeth against the pain until my jaw ached, exhaling sharply through my nose as I pulled him along with me.
It wouldn’t have been this unbearable if I hadn’t been fucking impaled. Sweat dripped down my forehead into my eyes and I tried to blink it away. With blood loss and the temperature in the hallway, the edges of my vision had turned hazy.
“It’s all right, Anthony,” I said as if he could hear me. “Stay with me.”
The heat flared, a sudden, familiar torrent of hot air passing over us, stoking the same dread I’d felt earlier. A silhouette emerged from the thick smoke and sauntered through the flames, not at all concerned about the heat or the danger of blistering skin and third-degree burns. I peered at the shadow that definitely hadn’t been there seconds before, watching them take shape, the details becoming clearer. A man stood on the opposite end of the hallway dressed in all black, white-gold reflecting off his sleek leather jacket. An arrogant, knowing grin curved his lips into a sneer. He was young. Dangerous.
He’d been with us in the attic.
I didn’t know how, but he’d started this fire.
