Cover Reveal: Simply Complicated

Title: Simply Complicated
Author: S. Nelson
Genre: Contemporary Sports Romance
Cover Design: CT Cover Creations
Release Date: September 29, 2021

BLURB

My plan is simple. Proposition a man and extend a challenge: help me accomplish something I’ve never been able to do before with past boyfriends.
But there are rules.
He needs to be a stranger and someone who won't judge me if I can't cross the finish line.
Luke Sorenson, one of the most famous soccer players in the world, isn't meant to be that man. He's the guy I grew up next door to. The man who broke my heart ten years ago, then moved across the country and never looked back.
He also happens to be the one person in the world I can't stand.
But as my best friend points out, he's the best option.
Besides, it's only for one night. What can possibly go wrong?

***

The last person I expect to see when I walk into a random corner bar is Olivia Brighton, the one woman I let slip through my fingers when I chased my dream a decade ago.
Not only do I run into her again, but I offer to help her out with her dilemma, and she accepts.
It's supposed to be a one-time occurrence. One shot to prove my skills in bed.
But that one shot turns into a deal, which morphs into something neither of us predicts.
One thing's for certain—everything is about to get simply complicated.

EXCERPT

“What are you doing here?” Olivia’s eyes were so big she reminded me of a cartoon character. A sexy, begging-to-be-kissed cartoon character.
“Surprise.” I moved to take a step inside, but she blocked me from entering. “You’re not going to let me in?”
“Not until you tell me what you’re doing here. How do you even know where my parents live?”
Her stunned expression had waned since she answered the door, but she was still a bit dumbstruck. I didn’t blame her, though. I did just show up out of the blue.
“Luke. Glad you could make it.” Mark walked up behind Olivia, but she was still blocking the doorway. When she continued to just stand there, he tapped her arm. “Don’t be rude. Let him in.”
“Yeah, Ollie. Let me in.”
“Ollie,” he repeated. “I haven’t heard anyone call her that in years.”
“That’s because it was my special nickname for her,” I said, my eyes veering to my friend before landing back on the gorgeous woman in front of me. With some light prodding from her older brother, she finally took a step back so I could enter. After shaking hands with Mark, who I’d run into earlier today at a liquor store of all places, I leaned in and kissed Olivia’s cheek right before I wrapped her in a huge hug. Pressing my lips to her ear, I whispered, “I miss being inside you.” She gasped the same time I released her. “How long has it been?” The only words Mark heard me speak were the last five.
“What?”
“I asked how long it’s been since we’ve seen each other.”
“Oh.” Her attention bounced between me and her brother. “Um… I… I don’t know.” She barely managed to get her words out, her flustered state not going unnoticed by Mark.
“What’s wrong with you? Why are you acting so weird?” he asked. “Is it because that guy will be here soon? Don’t be nervous. Luke and I got you. We’ll take some of the pressure off.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple. They’d always had such a close relationship and it was nice to see that aspect of their lives hadn’t changed.
“Who’s coming over?” I asked, pretending not to know that she was being set up on a blind date.
“My mom invited some guy over to dinner tonight to meet Olivia.”
“Doug,” she uttered. Her attention was on her sibling when she spoke. “Mom said his name is Doug.”
“Doug,” I repeated. I didn’t like the sound of his name.
“Yes, Doug. And don’t either of you say anything embarrassing.” With her shock at my intrusion finally gone, she followed Mark further into the house. And I had the pleasure of walking behind her. When I deemed my buddy was out of earshot, I grabbed her waist and stopped her in her tracks, resting my lips near her ear like I’d done a few minutes ago. “Do you like that I shaved?”
“It doesn’t make a difference to me.” She kept her back to me, but I could tell her breathing had quickened.
“It will, when my I bury my head between your legs again.”
She threw me a glare over her shoulder, but I saw the intrigue laced behind her eyes, even though she tried to hide it.
“You’re impossible.” She swatted at my hand.
“Impossibly horny.”

EXCERPT

I smile up at Keats before I turn and reach for my backpack. I pull it on as I turn to face him, and the long necklace I'm wearing disappears into the neckline of my tank top. I fish it out and see Keats watching from the corner of my eye, hunger in his gaze.
When I turn to face him completely, he wipes his face clean of any emotions, and I see a mask slip into place—one I am all too familiar with wearing myself. It's pleasant, not conveying the monster within or any of the emotions he's really feeling. He still hasn't responded to my question, so I ask, "Are you a Criminology major?"
"Uh, yeah. I just decided."
"Like, right this second?" I let my eyebrows rise to show faux surprise. Mel has already found out all the dirt on the academic careers of the boys we intend to bring down. I know each of their majors and grade point averages. I also know that most of them are working on majors that will serve them well in their family businesses.
Keats barks out a laugh and says, "No, this past summer. I decided it was probably the best fit for me. It's not like someone like me can go study fuckin' Shakespeare or something."
My heart, as cold and dead as it is, pinches ever so slightly at his words. Are we all just trapped in our fates? Unable to break away from our families to do whatever it is we really want to do? In a weird way, I could see Keats being more interested in fiction than reality, not that I've ever seen him with a book in his hands outside of school. That’s usually more Thayer's domain.
"Do your parents want you to work for them after school?" I ask, innocently.
He nods and rubs the back of his neck again. "I'm expected to go pre-law and follow in my dad's footsteps—become a partner at Kingsley Law. I got half of these to try and get out of it, but he's a stubborn asshole. At least I know where I get it." He gestures to his tattoos, and I realize that a lot of them are a form of rebellion, something I totally understand.
Most of the other people from our class have filed out while we've been talking, so it's just the two of us now. I'm not going to lie, a large part of me wants to lure him back to my basement and knock him out. Peel the skin from him until he confesses what they did—until he tells me how they drugged my sister and let her drive home after she and Jude got in a fight.
I can't, though. If I want to do this, I have to be able to back my claims up with evidence and prove that they did it, and not to the cops either. Oh, no. To the families that rule over Ascendance Bay. The evidence I need has to be concrete and not coerced. I have no doubt that, without a real confession and other evidence pointing toward them, accusing the Boys of Ascendance Bay of murder would only get me killed, last remaining heir to the Sterling empire or not. And we all know that confessions made during torture are unreliable.
"The art is beautiful," I say quietly, letting my gaze skip over his skin, taking in each piece individually and as a whole. With the t-shirt that's stretched over his muscular form, I can see every piece on his arms, hands, and neck. The fabric of the t-shirt is thin enough that I can see the shapes that reside on his skin underneath it.
"Thanks." There's an awkward pause, and I can tell he wants to say something, so I just watch him quietly. "Listen, I'm sorry about what Jude said at the party. He's got a lot on his plate, and he took it out on you, but that doesn't mean he was justified or that I'm on his side. I just wanted you to know that we don't all have the same...attitude he does. We're here for you, Little L. In that vein, I thought you should know that your skirt is pretty short."
I cross my arms over my chest, not only in anger, but also to trigger him to look at my breasts as they push up out of the neckline of my tank top.
He swallows hard and presses on with what I know he's trying to tell me. "When you reached for your paper, you, uh, flashed everyone behind you."
I know most girls would be mortified by the idea of someone else seeing their panties when they hadn't intended for that to happen. I, however, have two problems. First is the fact that I had intended to flash Keats, and second is that I don’t really care who saw. I knew going into this that I had two choices for how to react: I could blush and be bashful, or I could be brazen and wild.
For some reason, the wild child doesn't seem like the right play, so I conjure my most humiliating memory and make myself blush.

Prologue

Kane
Seven Years Earlier

“Why won’t she answer me?” I throw my phone across the bed, frustrated.

“You’re probably scaring her because you’ve done nothing but call her for the last hour,” Kai––my twin brother––says, rolling his eyes.

“It’s not like her not to answer,” I point out.

“Maybe she finally realized what a piece of garbage you are, and she’s moving on with her life.” He shrugs, and I launch a pillow in his direction.

“Fuck off, Kai.”

He gets off the bed, laughing. “Whatever. It’s not my fault you’re obsessed with your best friend.”

“I’m not obsessed with Noel,” I insist, lying through my teeth.

“Everyone but Noelle knows that you’re obsessed with her.”

I watch him leave the room and I get out of bed, frustrated. I guess I’ll go over to her house and find out what’s going on.

After what happened last night, I feel like we have a lot to talk about. I think I’m ready to tell her how I really feel. Last night changed everything. I don’t know if we can go back to what we were before.

I go outside, walking out to the sidewalk. Noelle Cooper has lived two houses down from us since we were in grade school. She was riding her bike down the sidewalk one day when her shoestring got stuck in her bike chain and she fell right in front of our house. I came outside to help, and we’ve been attached at the hip ever since.

I’m not obsessed with her. More like in love with her. I have been since we turned twelve and I started to notice just how gorgeous she really is. Now that we’re fifteen, it’s the only thing I notice.

She’s got this long blonde hair, almost white, that falls just past her shoulders. Her legs are long, and she has a yearlong tan that makes all the girls jealous. She could be a supermodel.

I’ve been pounding on their door for about five minutes when Mr. James––their neighbor––comes outside.

“They left,” he shouts from his porch.

“What do you mean, they left?” I ask.

“They loaded a moving van in the middle of the night and left early this morning. It looked like they were in a hurry.” He shrugs, walking back inside his house.

I feel my heart drop down to my stomach. That can’t be true. Noelle wouldn’t do that to me. She’s my best friend.

I walk around the house, peeking into the windows, and I’m starting to think Mr. James is right. There’s nothing left here.

What could have happened to make her family just up and leave in the middle of the night? Why wouldn’t she have at least called me and told me she was leaving?

My sadness quickly turns to anger. That’s fine. I guess Noelle Cooper was never really the friend I thought she was.

I’m wondering how long it will take to fall out of love with the first girl you ever fell in love with?

A half-smile curved his mouth. “You don’t actually want me to go. You pretend you can’t stand me, but you can’t even ignore me. I think you want to get under my skin.”
I raised my eyebrows. The audacity of him! “Don’t flatter yourself. If I had any say in things, you would’ve already disappeared off the face of the Earth, and I would go above and beyond to celebrate that.”
He tilted his head to the side. “Are you sure about that? Here’s what I think—I got under your skin, and now you’re trying to get my attention any way you can.”
Something in my chest tightened for a split second. “And I think Jupiter has got nothing on the size of your ego.”

Book Blitz: Vic Vaughn is Vicious & Giveaway

Vic Vaughn is Vicious
J.A. Huss
Publication date: August 31st 2021
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

My name is Vicious. God-given name, I cross my heart.

And it fits.

I’m a hot-as-f, inked-up tattoo artist at the trendiest shop in the Rocky Mountains.

I have the looks, I have the bike, I have the reputation.

That means I get the ladies.

Sure. There are lots of women out there who hate tattoos. Wouldn’t be caught dead with guys like me. And that’s fine. I’m not looking for girls like that.

I’m looking for that other kind of girl.

The wild one, the bad one, the crazy one.

Funny thing is… the one I fell for isn’t that girl.

She’s the Good Girl.

And maybe back when she was nineteen I came off as a ‘maybe’, but after seven years of distance I am now the definition of ‘not a keeper’.

But I can be a keeper.

I can make the good girl swoon.

I can be the dream guy she never saw coming.

If she would just… not press charges… I’m pretty sure I can turn this whole relationship around.

Vic Vaughn is Vicious is a bad-boy-trying-his best-to-win-her-back romantic comedy about a misunderstood tattoo-artist-biker called Vicious and a good girl named Daisy who ghosted him seven years ago after she came to her senses. It’s filled with funny twists, dreams of grandeur, and all seven members of the most inappropriate family in all of Colorado.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Audible

IMPORTANT! The eBook will release a day early on Nook, Apple, and KOBO (August 30th) and then IMMEDIATELY BE TAKEN OFF SALE so that Vic Vaughn is Vicious can go directly into Kindle Unlimited.
This book WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE ON AMAZON after August 30th.

EXCERPT:

“Wanna go out there?” he asks me.

I don’t know what to say. I mean, not particularly. I don’t want to go out there. I want to stay in here with him.

I want to study every inch of this room.

I want to know this man.

Turning away from the open doors, I shake my head a little and once again concentrate on all the things in this space that give away hints to who and what he is.

The bed is just a mattress set on top of stacks of wooden pallets. It’s not made. But that just makes it more interesting, not less. His sheets and pillowcases are light gray satin, but his comforter is a dark gray luxurious velvet. I can only imagine what it feels like to sleep in his bed with those two contrasting textures on either side of your body.

Then I picture what it would feel like to lie next to him in that bed. To be his.

I let out a breath and allow my eyes to wander up the wall where there are more framed pictures. Magazine covers. Tattoo magazine covers, specifically.

And his face.

Vic Vaughn is Vicious, the cover in the center reads.

He’s standing next to me and I cannot stop the quick rotation of my head in his direction as I realize just who I am with. “You’re… him.”

“Him?” He smiles coyly. Then he nods his chin at the magazine covers. “I’m him. Wanna run away now?”

I shake my head, then whisper, “Not a chance.”

He closes the short distance between us, slipping behind me. And when his lips lower down to the exposed skin on the back of my neck, I have to suck in a breath and try my best not to shiver. His fingertips slide up my arms and then he slips them back down, taking my coat along for the ride. I turn to face him just as he slips his jacket off too. Then he walks over to a large, open closet and hangs them both on wooden hangers.

I don’t know why this simple act makes me tingle all over, but it does.

And he knows it does. I can tell by the way he’s looking at me.

“How old are you?” I ask.

“Way too old for you. What about you? Wanna admit to it?”

Not sure if I do. But I say it anyway. “Nineteen. Do you want me to leave now?”

“I think I want you to stay forever.”
